NYC to Georgia in August? Interest and/or advice wanted
Enviado por Anonymous el Dom, 2010-04-18 12:52.
Hi. I have never planned a tour or gone on a tour before. I am a city commuter and want to go on a trip this summer. Ideally, I would find a few great people to ride NYC to Athens, GA. . .but I have realized I might be getting in over my head with regard to planning and distance as a first time tourist. Also, maybe it is too hot to ride this route at this time of year. (?) Anyone with input or interest, I welcome your feedback.
Thanks,
Krista

Your Tour
Hi Krista,
It was a few years ago now, 2001, but I rode much of the tour you want to do in August and sept. I started in Charlottesville VA. Then headed to the coast, and south. If you ride along the coastal areas, it will be humid, and a bit hot, but you will get used to it. I would say ride along the Outer Banks of NC, with ferries between islands, many areas will have showers along the beaches and it will be cooler then inland.
If you want some advise as to packing....let me know what help you might need if I can help in anyway, let me know. I live in NJ, so if you're in NYC, I can even meet you, as I go there most weeks to dance.
Good luck, Tom

NYC to GA
Krista:
Sounds like a great trip. I live in/on Virginia's Eastern Shore between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Last year I hosted several people that rode from Maine, NYC, Long Island, etc to points south. They came down through New Jersey, crossed the Deleware Bay at Cape May, NJ on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. Bicyclists pay the pedestrian fare. From Lewes, DE you can work your way down the Atlantic Coast on US 1 from Rehoboth Beach, DE to Ocean City, MD and then head inland a bit or come a bit inland straight from Lewes, DE and work mainly back rural roads down to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Authority will haul you and your rig across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel into the southern terminus in Virginia Beach for the cost of a car toll ($12.00). This is a great deal. You have WarmShower hosts in Vineland, NJ.; Harbeson, DE.; Delmar, DE.; me here in Atlantic, VA.; and several options in the Virginia Beach, VA area. Jack in Harbeson, Kim in Virginia Beach and me here in Atlantic, VA are all happy to give fairly detailed route planning advice.
I have several routes that I have mapped out/cue sheets going from Cape May, NJ to the northern terminus of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. If you want my routes and notes, send me an Email through WarmShowers.
Cheers! Bear Starr
me too
can I also have a copy of your route and cue sheet thanks a lot
NJ route
Hi Bear
That sounds like part of the tour I want to do. I didn't know there was a ferry at Cape May! That might be very helpful to me - skipping the ride through Philly. I live in Brooklyn and want to ride to Rockville, MD (Washington, DC area).
Do you know where I can get info on riding down NJ from Belford (Manhattan ferry stop) to Cape May?
Or any Eastern NJ routes from Cape May north?
thank you so much

Similiar Plan for this summer
Hey Kirista,
My girlfreind and I are riding from Lyons NY, (up state), to (Orlando?)Florida and back. June 28-August 20. Maybe we could join up in our travels. We can not change our dates because we are both student teaching when we return. Is your departure date date tentitive? Our plan visiting places, Hershey park, Getsysburg, both half to one day stops. Washington D.C. full day. A beach in NC, SC, GA, or FL. On the return, the smoky Mountains, and Banner ELk. We both would love to have you join us for even just a few days of the trip. We could meet up somewhere. We move kind of fast about 65 - 110 miles a day. At least that was what we did last last year on our trip to Maine and back. So, we do have some experenice. We are riding fully loaded trek 520's. Please let us know if your interested. So, we can match travel styles. and locate a meeting point.

NYC to Ga. tour
Hi Krista.
Yes, it will be hot. Do what the folks here in the southwest do- take a siesta in the middle
of the day when it's the hottest. Have a plan for those summer thunderstorms, too.
I would suggest you do a couple of weekend mini-tours as a shakedown for gear and rider(s).
It will give you a better idea of what you need to make your trip a success. If you are camping,
there are all sorts of little tricks of the trade to make life on the road more comfortable.
Good luck, and happy trails.
