Looking for Companions to cycle across US in early Nov to mid Dec, probably from Florida to Texas

Hi all,

I come from Hong Kong and I am planning to do a cross states trip in the US during Nov to mid-Dec. Based on my research, areas around the Mexican Gulf seems to have a more pleasant weather so tentatively I am looking to cycling from Florida to Texas. However, I understand that it may not have the best scenes in the US...

Looking to see if anyone also interested to cycle along that route ... or if anyone have any alternative cycling routes that I can possibly join?

On experience, I have cycled several short trips (5-10 days) in Taiwan, China and Korea, but this is the first long haul trip that I will be doing. Planning to cycle leisurely at around 50-60mi a day.

Cycling Texas to Florida

I am considering a very similar ride. My limited research suggests departing March 1st will provide the best chance for good weather. This area has high humidity in the summer and hurricanes and other rainy weather during the winter months. There seems to be a 4-6 week window starting the last week in February where the riding is most favorable.

The Gulf Coast (as the area is known) would certainly not be among my top ten U.S. routes - I believe there are much more scenic routes. I am considering riding this area because I have seem most of the U.S. This being said, you may have very good reasons to want to pedal this route.

Hi E,

Hi E,

If you are still planning to do the southern Tier, let me know and I could at least join you for 1 or 2 days when you pass close to my home. You could also veer north off the route into Alabama to stay one night at our house, or I can just pedal down to meet you on the route with my camping gear for one night. I live directly above Bonifay, FL. So I could ride with you from about Appalachicola River to Crestview.

I would say October is the best month for good weather along the northern Gulf coast, even though some hurricanes come that late. November can also be good, with more rain coming by December. Spring can be very rainy until April, with May drier but also getting hot again.

Hey Edwin

Hey Edwin

Great receiving from you. Sorry for the delayed replies as I have been om the flight. However tentatively I have detoured to start at Atlanta and down to Florida. Then I will probably start again at Mobile AL. So I am afraid I might be skipping the areas that you mentioned. I will keep you posted if anything changed. I will expect to arrive Mobile AL by Nov 20 so even if I cycle through your area will be before that date.

I'm in Tallahassee now and

I'm in Tallahassee now and could definitely get to Mobile by the 23rd or 24th. I'm also planning to head to Texas to meet up with a friend in Austin sometime in the first week of December. I think that would equal out to about the pace you'd like to ride. How are you getting to Mobile from Savannah?

Waz up, Elvera

Once I get to Key West I'm making a return journey from Key West, FL back to Sacramento, CA where i began my tour. I'll be returning on the Southern Route through Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and into California to San Diego. Keep in touch and perhaps we'll be able to meet up at some point.

If you have any questions about the southern route, I'd be happy to answer them.

Happy Trails,

Oak
