I live in NC and am interested in doing this ride. Does anybody know where I could stay CHEAP. Any pointers on riding the ride and where to stay would be helpful.
The year I did it, the HQ for the ride was at the YHA (Hostel International) , so that would be one place to consider staying. (Book well in advance - it was completely full that weekend.) There is a huge crowd at the start, waiting for the official beginning time. I was probably standing somewhere in the middle - everyone was very friendly with no sense of rushing. The start was obviously very slow, but after the first mile or s, it sorted out enough for people to sort of go at their own pace. There were a couple of official banana stations and drinks being handed out along the way. However, people also took picnic snacks/lunches and/or stopped at cafes along the way. The ride is not technical at all. i had been to NYC before, but this was the day that I really felt I had gotten a "Feel" for the city. I loved every moment of cycling through the diverse neighbourhoods. There was a relaxed, fun party atmsphere at the end, with live music, food etc, before taking the ferry back to Manhatten - again everyne was in good humour at the end ( desite there actually being a ferry strike that year)
