Too much time on your hands?

After eleven years of hosting we get this message?
Please say something descriptive about yourself in the 'About You' field! Potential hosts or guests want to know about you. You must enter at least 50 words. Your account will be deleted if this is not meaningful.

I guess that'll be down to

I guess that'll be down to this:
https://github.com/warmshowers/Warmshowers.org/commit/30dd2f6f08d8c5568b681c6e00a243238a88899c
and then this:
https://github.com/warmshowers/Warmshowers.org/commit/2a5373f51a8bcba321800cc1620d38f88d08ad48

I didn't think it was going to be applicable to already existing accounts though.

Hilarious

Does anyone really think the number of words will act as a quality filter?

WS Member Imagen de WS Member
I don't but evidently WS do.

I don't but evidently WS do. They have correctly identified the problem (too many members registered as hosts but not interested in hosting - albeit 3 years and tens of thousands of members too late) but have never been able to explain why the more obvious measure of signing up new members as unavailable to host by default has never been implemented, despite being asked on numerous occasions.

Host first?

We hosted for the first couple of years, then actually started being guests. Perhaps a better qualifier.

~~ Think they're just trying

~~ Think they're just trying to get reduce the number of inactive users which present a real problem ~~

Makes sense, don't want to take the time to craft a nice About page then.... you're got increase chance of them not being real users.

Another bad filter choice?

Taking the time to craft a nice About page only shows you like playing with words on your computer.

I instigated this change

As Registrar of WS, I have overseen the review of new members on a daily basis. Today's new member count is 111. That is a lot of profiles to review for spam and appropriateness. This takes time to review, and I am only a volunteer.

Since expanding the words from 15 to 30 and then to 50 last week, I have noticed a huge change in the quality placed in the profiles. People are definitely signing up with more pertinent information. And those who lack the desire to place anything meaningful stand out quicker for deletion (someone last week typed in "Hi" 50 times). And believe it or not, 50 words is not that much. We have only expanded the required wording from 2 sentences to a short paragraph. In the future, I hope we can break down the narrative into sections (hosting, traveling, and other). If you add a sentence about your last/next tour, another about the type of bike you ride, and another about what you offer as a host... you have reached the 50 word minimum.

As an existing member, I am not sure why you received this message to expand to 50 words. I am not a tech person and do not understand that part of the site. I am guessing you went to update your profile and fell under the new parameters on the site. If this is the case, I should probably say something about this on Facebook so no one is surprised when this happens.

The "accept everyone" philosophy no longer applies as we are nearing 100,000 members worldwide, and the active members are loudly voicing the problems of having so many inactive/unresponsive members. I have drafted a policy for the review of new members. We are not trying to discriminate against people who do not want to take the time to complete a meaningful profile, but we are trying to protect the 90,000+ members already in the community.

With all this said, it amazes me that only about 20% of ALL new profiles do not include a profile picture when signing up. But that is a different rant and subject to tackle on a different day...

Profile pictures

Thank you Ken for your explanation. The event occurred while I was setting us to "unavailable" if that helps solve the issue.
Perhaps a mandatory profile picture would be an effective filter.
When a guest has no profile picture combined with a very short time as a warmshowers member and no feedback we tend to turn them away.
Tracking members hosting, responsiveness and feedback as guests may be better filters as well.
In a world of billions, 100,000 is a drop in the bucket. Perhaps members need to be less sensitive and appreciate how lucky we are to be growing as a community.

My profile clearly states that I do not except people without profile pictures. (Anyone is welcome to check out my profile to get ideas. It has, and continues, to evolve over time.)

If you're asking to come into my house, you need to represent yourself.

As for hosting responsiveness, the only way we can actually track that would be through members feedback. Fortunately, not all members leave feedback, therefore this is not a very reliable instrument.

"too much time on your hands?"

ain't progress grand?

that function is in response to folks who don't want to look at people who don't describe themselves.
I suggest you simply copy & paste something from a review you've received. (hmmm, I should do this myself.)

cheers,
Gerhardt (used to be "in Portland", soon to be somewhere else)

new "About You"

Thanks to everyone for their input. Initially I did post from feedback. Upon reflection of the issues described above i have tidied our description up.
