Map too cluttered with users/member balloons

Hi.
Whilst it's great that warmshowers has continued to flourish it can prove very difficult plotting ahead from one particular host's location to another as the map becomes so cluttered with the member balloons (the red markers). How about adding a tick box next to the map to Enable / Disable the user markers? When a town of interest has been found, the user could then re-enable the markers to see if said town has any members.

Some of the cities - such as Strasbourg (France) - are just a sea of balloons, masking the city name from view, this makes it initially difficult to see if one is over the correct area in the first place.

I second that suggestion.

map balloons ...

I'll second that, too . and how about a way to " Like" posts ( a la facebook) **without** having to make a whole "New reply" [ like this one ...!]....

"me, too" posts can be very annoying in any www forum. I hope this one isn't too annoying....but what alternative do I have ?

Sorting out possible hosts?

Have you tried "Search by Location" on the front page bottom left hand side?
Its a handy function, you can download the results into a CSV file for an excell spreadsheet, save it to your computer and then at a glance see who is in a town/area you are interested in.

search town name, save a file, open in excel (have a coffee), task, task task.

yes, I am aware of this method, but I try to maintain not being glued to my pc and prefer to 'drag' the map across from town to town and (occasionally) see what host's may be around without it turning into a evenings task opening m.s. office and the like (It's bad enough wasting time contacting members who choose not to reply, or whom use a secondary email account and check their messages once every 6 months).

When on an extended tour across many countries [good] internet access can be difficult so a time efficient method is prefered, leaving more time to explore the town/city that one is presently in.

As an assembly language firmware engineer I understand adding an enable/disable tick box would be relatively simple within the HTML language.

A real problem

This is definitely a real problem - thanks to all for thinking it through and brainstorming solutions. I have opened https://github.com/warmshowers/Warmshowers.org/issues/404 to discuss and propose solutions. You can reply there (with a free github account) or here, and I'll add new ideas to the issue.

Hi Randy.

As stated I'm not a HTML or C programmer but believe the enable/disable tick box would be the most code efficient.

There are other possible options though, such as setting one of the corners of the map 'window' to make the balloons appear transparent (or even disappear) when the map is 'dragged' into said corner, then the town/city names could be seen.

It will be interesting to see what other members suggest.

Dim hosts checkbox there now.

I added a "Dim hosts" checkbox on the map page. Please take a look and see how it works for you. It lowers opacity (on the red markers only); I can tune it if you think it needs more or less dimming. Note that I didn't figure out how to dim the larger clusters (the round circles with numbers in them) so you have to be zoomed in enough to be past them.

Interested in your feedback.
