Italy to Croatia Border Crossing

My partner and I are planning a cycling trip from Landeck, Austria (western Austria) to Venice, Italy. I am American, she is German. We will ride through South Tirol and continue to the Italian coast. We would like to go to the Croatian coast as well, if time allows.

Does anyone have any experience crossing the Italian/Croatian border?
Do you get stopped and controlled crossing into Croatia?
How is the riding along the Croatian coast? Bike lanes? Yielding automobiles? Scenic coastline?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

highly recommend the croatian coastline very beutiful I cycled it up to slovenia well worth it:)

croatia does check passports visas etc and not all roads are border crossings.

not too many bike lanes but the high tourist season will be beginnning to finish so maybe the trafffic wont be too bad!

also some of the Islands off croatia are wortha visit:)

Thanks

Hi Don,

Thanks for information. Our plans have changed and we will now be going north, back toward the Dolomites. However, that is good info to have and exactly what I have heard about the Croatian coast. Thanks again.
