Airport: can we tape our bike boxes shut or do they need to be open for TSA?

Train: in Germany we will be traveling by train ... With four bikes, we are a family. Is there a special compartment for bikes? Are there some trains where they are not permitted?

Thank you
Carla

They always open them...

In the US the TSA seems always to open up any interesting container. Every time we travel they open up our boxes. And they tape them back up. Nothing bad has happened so far.

Train in Germany

Hi Carla,

in Germany there a gernerally two train types, long distance train (ICE, IC, EC)
and short distance train (IRE, IR, RB) you can take your bike in almost every train, only for the ICE it's not possible.

For the long distance train you have to make a reservation, for the short-distance train you don't need a reservation. But especially on the weekend it could be that there is not enough space for everyone. There are bicycle sings on the train, marking the right wagon.

Find the website here:

I wonder if there is a way to

I wonder if there is a way to mail our boxed bicycles from Frankfurt to our hotel in Donaueschingen, since we are stopping for two days in Fussen and we don't need the bikes there? It seems so complicated to do all the train stations with our four bikes if we don't need them....

You could use the luggage

You could use the luggage service: http://www.bahn.de/p_en/view/offers/luggage/kuriergepaeck.shtml . A boxed bicycle would count as special luggage.

Bikes in boxes

If our bikes are in the boxes we still can't take them in the ICE train I wonder?

There's very little luggage

There's very little luggage space in the ICEs, barely enough room for the suitcases...and you're not allowed to block aisles. So, taking 4 bicycles in boxes is out. Especially in summer, trains are often packed. Local train should be okay, as said before, for IC u need to book room in the bike compartment.

bike in German trains

There are special compartements/places for bikes in most trains. You can see a bike painted at the waggon.
Look for your train connection at "www.bahn.de". Don't forget to sign (at the end of the page) that you need trains with "Fahrradmitnahme".
You can't take your bike with you in an "ICE".
You need a ticket for the bike in any case which is 6 Euros (?) per bike for trips within Germany and 10 Euros for European Connections which cross the border.
You need an extra reservation in an "IC" or "City night line". It is possible to get this reservation for the bike online together with the online-ticket in case your train trip is within Germany. For trains which cross the border you cannnot get the reservation and ticket for the bike online but only at a station.
You don't need a reservation in trains for short distances (Nahverkehr).
Try to book as early as possible as cheap tickets are available 91 days in advance.
Everything clearly explained?
Best wishes for a nice trip
Franziska
